Creating a Web Based Business – How To Design Website

How to design your own website – You are most likely coming here as a follow up to my seventh article in the series on creating an online business. I hope you have found the other articles informative.

Today in article number eight I am going to cover web page layout and design. It’s important to always be working toward your long-term goal of having a presentable, fast loading website. Studies have shown that people who will open your site will mostly see what I call hot zones.

To understand the hot zone lets draw an imaginary line on your web page from the top left hand corner over to the right and then half way down the page on the left side much like a triangle. There is also a hot spot from left to right along the very bottom of the page. Most of your visitors are going to see these areas only.

How To Design Website

These advanced techniques are things that I learned only after a year of website design so it should give you a head start on your business. You may be thinking okay why have the rest of the page if visitors are only going to look at the hot spots? Well a large percentage will look there and that will be where you want most of your best converting offers, but others will spend time looking through your whole site. The goal is to increase the time they stay on your site, which increases chances for a conversion into a sale.

best offers have prominence

The placement of offers on your site will be somewhat dynamic in that you can monitor and move around the opportunities that you find converting well. If you see one program located at the bottom of your page converting at 20% versus another at 1% that is located at a hot spots. Change them! It’s that simple give the top converting programs the most exposure.  Promoting special offers and promo’s with sales with discounts will always draw visitors to them.

A hosting company will more than likely give you a website template, especially if you have followed what I did throughout this series. If you did than you are on the right track to keeping your site looking organized and presentable. This means making sure things are lined up properly, spelling and grammar are correct and use friendly colors.

How To Design Websites With

Visitors In Mind

In the next example I’m going to use my web site as a reference so that you get an idea of what I’m talking about. You can then incorporate your products and services in the same manner. The point is you need to keep similar programs on the same web page.

For example you will find by going to my sites that I have a Work at Home, Online Paid Surveys, Moms Jobs, Top10, and Home Based Business pages. Why do I do that? Well if someone is looking for a home based business they don’t want to have to sift through work at home or survey programs to find out what they are looking for. The more they have to look the lower your chances of converting them into a customer will be. They as I would, under the same circumstances, will get frustrated and move on.

If on the other hand someone is looking for Online Paid Surveys and you send them to a landing page that has all of your survey opportunities nicely organized on one page then they will be more likely to either take action then or bookmark your site so they can come back later. We have all found sites that we really liked the way they were designed and bookmarked them for later use.

how to seo a website

The best way to ensure your website is the one people choose is to get your SEO right and this means using the right keywords.  These are words or phrases that you hope people will be typing into their browsers and so be taken to your site or find you high up in the SERPs (search engine Results Pages).   Your e-commerce site should be responsive and dynamic to get your website the most views.  The more people view your site, the better your chances of making sales.  Always keep your hoped for visitors in mind – make sense?  Of course it does!

Okay in summary, you will put your best programs in the hot spots. The rest of the programs will be nicely organized throughout your site and you will have multiple landing pages. Make sense? I hope so, because if you do it the right way up front you will save yourself more time and make more money.

Well I think we have covered enough for this part.

  2. Hi Robert,

You have a clean, clear, and pretty straightforward review here. I’ll be trying out your recommendations on a page and see how readers react to it.

What do you mean when you mention programs in the top and bottom? Do you mean banners, offers, etc?

    Thanks for the advice,

    Luis A.J.

    1. Hello Luis A.J. and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.

As I say in my articles I always appreciate it when people do this as it lets me know I am giving pertinent information.

Yes please do try out my recommendations regarding the triangles.

No I don’t mean you should have your banners at the top of the page.

You should have a paragraph or two above what is termed – ‘Above The Fold’.

This you do in order to let visitors know what your article is going to be about.

If its not what they are looking for then they will leave.

If they have to scroll down past banners and Image Ads they will not bother and leave.

I have proved this time and time again with my own sites.

In my experience people who visit sites through the search terms they have typed into their browser rarely read an article top to bottom.

What they usually do is scan left to right and not read every single word.

Therefore they will read the first paragraph to see if indeed the article will tell them what they wish to know and if so, scan the rest until they get to near the bottom then again read the last or last two paragraphs.

Therefore it makes sense to write your most important message in the first paragraph and again your call to action within the last paragraph or maybe two.

If your call to action is good enough they will then click through to whatever the link is directing them to.

Thank you for reading my article and its obvious you read all the way to the bottom and this is what you want your website visitors to do as well.

Have a great Friday and please do visit again.

  3. Hello Robert,

Thank you very much for providing this tutorial. I still remember a couple years ago, I wanted to create a website for a game that I played. It was very difficult, so I never completed the project. However, after reading your article, I was able to finally start my own website.

It was so pain-free compared to the experience I had n the past. In terms of hosting the website goes, which provider do recommend?

    1. Hello Eric Chen and thank you for taking time out to leave a comment.

There are many many online companies that say they will either build a website for you oir teach you how to do it yourself.

I personally have been building websites since the early days of the internet way back in the 1990’s.

Back then you had to know a lot of code to create something worthwhile that people would visit and stay there to browse.

Ever since WordPress came into being building websites has become very easy simply because most of the work has already been done for you with the huge number of Themes available.

This being so all most people who want to build a website only need some basic training to get a site up and running and that is where online companies such as the one I’m a member of come into their own.

They give you all the training you need to create and build out a website and they throw in free hosting, domain name and maintenance as well.

Therefore to answer you question about hosting companies I would have to say Wealthy Affiliate simply because it gives you those freebies.

Its also free to join and you can stay as long as you want to and you can actually get twenty five websites and all hosted for free.

I hope I have given you enough information to get building out your website until you are satisfied that it will do the job its intended for.

Thanks again for reading my article and please do come again.

I have two more articles to publish which will contain lots more tips and advice.

      have a great Thursday.

      Robert Allan
