What’s The Best Way To Make Money Online (Beginners Guide With Videos)

Updated 17th August 2019

How To Choose The Right Affiliate Program To Earn An Income From [Points Checklist]

So what’s the best way to make money online, for awhat is the best affiliate marketing guide decent income that is, and how do you find the best affiliate program?  I say this because I’m afraid that not all affiliate programs are created equal.

In fact, some companies hardly put forth any effort at all, leaving their affiliates to fend for themselves.  Other companies, however, take great steps to support their affiliates and to motivate them to promote their products.

The ‘How To’ Of Affiliate Marketing For Beginners

Below, and in my experience are the main points to follow to finding the best affiliate program to make money with, and that’s also the best program fit for you.  These points are especially important,

if you’re a complete beginner and want to make some real money at affiliate marketing.

how to affiliate marketing

  • Start the search. Search affiliate program directories for top level programs. And research online.  Visit websites that provide products and services relevant to your chosen niche and search for ‘affiliate program’ ‘partners’ or other words which might indicate they have an affiliate program.  Make a note of the products, services and companies that interest you.  If need be then dig a little deeper until you find a program that’s a good fit for you.

  • Evaluate commission percentages.  This isn’t the first point to evaluate but its certainly not the last and it may not be the most important.  However, make note of the commission rates each of your potential affiliate programs pay.  Consider creating a spreadsheet to compare programs so you can choose the best ones based on all the criteria once you’ve gathered the information.

  • Evaluate cookies.  No, not chocolate chip cookies, but those little tracking devices that tell a company where a customer came from.  Lifetime cookies are the ideal because then no matter when your visitor decides to make a purchase, you get the credit for it.  If the cookie only lasts a week or a month, you may miss out on sales commissions.

  • What does their sales page look like and what is their conversion rate?  Your job as an affiliate is to pre-sell. You want to make sure you’re sending people to a sales page that converts visitors into buyers.  If you visit a potential affiliate program’s sales page and the website or sales page just doesn’t work then you know all your pre-selling efforts are going to be wasting a lot of time and effort.

  • Support and marketing materials.  What do you get when you’re an affiliate? Some companies provide an abundance of information and marketing materials, others provide a link and nothing more.  The link only programs aren’t necessarily bad.  But it’s nice to have buttons, content, graphics and other materials to help promote a product or service.

How You Get Paid In Affiliate Marketing

As long as they fulfill those five steps above you know you are getting involved with a good program.  However your potential customers are important too, so you should also review their customer service.

You not only want to have a good customer service experience as an affiliate with top notch affiliate support.  You also want to know that the customers you send to this company are going to be treated well and their custom is appreciated.

Its always nice to know you will get paid, and on time as well.  So ask how often do they pay?  Some affiliate programs pay quarterly, some pay as soon as you earn a commission from a sale.

Slow payers aren’t necessarily bad programs.  It just helps to know when you can expect to get your money.

As more and more companies realize the benefits of having an affiliate team, they’re not only creating affiliate programs, they’re improving their programs too.  This means there are many good affiliate programs for you to choose from.   Just make sure you choose a good one.  Do your research folks!

  1. Thank you for this great post my friend.
As a beginner you guide me especially the five steps to start. Many times I over looked the 5 steps which result in confusion.

  2. Hello my name is John from WA. I’m doing comments in my course schedule.
I viewed your site on affiliate programs and I really enjoyed it.
I like the idea you pointed out using a spread sheet to compare program so you can pick the best ones.
I also learn something new about cookies. I did not know about the lifetime ones, nice to know.
If you visit my website you can see I a beginner, I’m always looking for suggestions.

    1. Hi John
Its always best to do your research on affiliate programs and compile a list.
Then you go through each one and pick the one that’s the best fit for you.
Its also best to go with a Niche that you have some experience of and/or knowledge of as well.
This way you can write articles on the products within that niche with some authority and expertise.
This expertise will come across in your articles and visitors will come to trust what you are saying.
Trust is very important in marketing online John.
You are expecting your visitors to turn into buyers so you must give them the information they are looking for.
      I wish you success.
      Robert Allan

  3. I never realised paying closer attention to cookies too can be a big deal in affiliate marketing programs because I’ve never given it a second thought. All I was concerned about were the commissions. Furthermore, I like your simplification of the process for beginner affiliates. Its surely helpful. I will definitely improve on your stated points. Thanks for taking your time to broaden my knowledge with this post.

    1. Hello RoDarrick and thank you for leaving your comment.
Yes indeed the majority of affiliate programs have cookies, and as I say in the article some programs cookies are only active for a day (24 hours to be exact).
Others last a week and some for a full month (28 days).
The program I’m a member of (Wealthy Affiliate) actually has lifetime cookies, which I might add is very rare.
I hope you visit again when I’m sure you will go away with more tips that will aid you in your own online efforts to earn an income from the internet.
Best wishes for your success whatever you do.

  4. This is one of the best I’ve seen on the topic of picking affiliate programs.  For your information, I signed up to two affiliate programs before I found Wealthy Affiliates which I planned to use in connection with my Pinterest account.  I didn’t even have that much information when I did.  So, I am still at the beginning of my new career and don’t have anything to report.  However, I do believe a plan of action is important and you offer a good one on an important facet of the game.  I felt a little left out as to the “how” side of things.  But since you also set out to direct people to Wealthy Affiliates and its training, I guess you couldn’t include too much.

    1. Hi Stanley and thank you for dropping by and leaving your comment.
Do your research before you pick an affiliate program to work with is always the first thing to do.
Then you must have a plan of action.
Someone once said – if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
      Very true words Stanley.
Also get the best affiliate training you can and as you say you are a member of wealthy affiliate it is one of the very best around.
There is lots of help and support and if you get really stuck then get in touch with me and I will be more than happy to help.
      Onwards to success Stanley.
      Best regards.
      Robert Allan

  5. Before, I was just focused on the commissions and conversion rates and haven’t been paying much attention to cookies. Lifetime cookies – are you serious? I’ve never seen such a thing and doubt any merchant would be that generous. The shortest I’ve seen is 24 hours and that’s coming from Amazon. For me, 15 to 30 days seem decent and anything beyond that, I fear the customers may have lost interest in buying.

    1. Hello Cathy
Of course the online companies have cookies of different time scales but there are lifetime cookies on some websites and Wealthy Affiliate is one of those companies.
WA is not an affiliate company as such but it does have an affiliate program that works in exactly the same way as other ones.
Visitors to any site can keep coming back to that site several times Cathy (I believe the average is seven times before they turn into buyers), so to say they will lose interest isn’t quite the full picture.
Their current and immediate future situation might not change for several weeks or even months so its quite possible that they will take note of a URL so that they can make a return visit.
Thank you for your visit and your comment Cathy and please do have a great day.
      Best Regards.

  6. Hi Robert,

Thanks for this informative post. I have been doing research in to affiliate marketing training and many of the organisations that provide it seem too pushy. This always puts me off, even though they say that it is possible to earn money quickly with affiliate marketing. Can you really earn money quickly as an affiliate marketer?

    1. Hello Tom and thank you for taking the time to read my article on affiliate marketing.
You do ask a really good pertinent question – Can you really earn money quickly as an affiliate marketer?
I will answer as best as I can and my answer will be solely based on my own personal experience.
First off you should have your own website so that you are in control.
Within that website you should have a lot of good informative reviews of whatever products you’re promoting.
It should also have actual images of the products you’re promoting.(I see so many sites that are full of text with no images of products).
people like to see what they might be buying and they just will not read great blocks of text.

Anyway it will take time to create and build out a website that the online companies will allow to promote their product or service.
A new site with very little content just wont cut it and the companies just will not entertain it.

So creating lots of content about the products you would like to promote would be your first task .
You do this before you apply to be an affiliate to the relevant affiliate programs.

Then you have to promote your site on the internet and try to get a good rank in the search engine result pages and preferably get listed on the first page and if not then certainly on the second or third page.
People browsing the internet seldom look past that third page.

Getting a good rank will also take time, and that of course is after your site is indexed which can take up to and sometimes beyond two weeks.

Are you getting some idea of the time frame involved Tom?

      First a site built.
Then content for that site which will take you anything from three to four to create and get ranked.
You also have to realize that people wont buy on the first visit.
The average is 5 to seven visits before they make up their minds to buy.

At the end of the day I would reckon it would be at least six months before you saw any return on your investment of time and effort before you would start to make any commissions.
Online Affiliate Marketing is a great way to earn an income Tom, but like anything else it takes work.
Do not treat it like a hobby.
Treat it like the business it is, and spend time building it just like you would build an offline bricks and mortar one.

I hope I have given you food for thought and you will at least give affiliate marketing a try.
If you get stuck then get in touch and I will be more than happy to give you a few pointers.

Have a great day wherever you are in the world and be successful at whatever you are currently involved in.
      Very Best regards.
      Robert Allan

  7. That really is a clear and informative wealthy affiliate review Robert, it is easy to follow and you make it look very professional, I take inspiration from you and hope I can follow in your foot steps.

    1. Hi Russ
Thank you for reading my article and for your kind words about its content.
I do my best to inform my site visitors so that they can go away with a good idea just what is involved with starting and running an online business from their home.
All it takes to be successful is 100% effort Russ.
Stay focused and invest a certain amount of time every day, seven days a week until you can see a return on that investment.
Please visit again and pick up some more tips and advice as I publish on a regular basis so there’s always going to be something new to learn.

  8. Thank you for the wonderful tips on looking into affiliate programs. I am new to affiliate marketing and have not seen fruits to my labors yet. I’m only 5 months young and using amazon affiliates as my main program. Are they a program you recommend? Do you have any alternative programs you recommend? Thanks for your help!

    1. Hello Sherry and thank you for dropping by and leaving a comment.
I’m always happy to pass on my tips and advice and in fact you will find this website of mine full of both.

One of the biggest complaints about Amazon is that the commissions are usually quite small.
Also their Affiliate cookie only lasts for 24 hours, and their Terms & Service can be a bit confusing. If you violate any of their terms your account could be banned.
Their Payment Options are also limited. The main one being if you don’t live in the United States you are left with only 2 choices. You can either get paid by check or by Amazon Gift Cards.
The problem with checks is that you also have to accept the processing fees (both from Amazon and probably from your bank too). That can be quite a cost especially if you are not earning much in the first place. Plus it takes time for the check to arrive at you.
Amazon also doesn’t use PayPal, and direct deposit is only available in the U.S.

Possible alternatives to Amazon could be –

      Jet – https://jet.com/affiliates

Its a massive online retailer that sells almost everything. So, just for reason, you should seriously consider joining their affiliate program.

Another company is Walmart – https://affiliates.walmart.com/#!/

Although not as popular as Amazon their affiliate program can be a good alternative for those living in Canada, USA, and Mexico.

Then there is Etsy whch is very popular for female affiliates –

This because Their categories include home products, clothing, jewelry, arts, crafts, toys, books and much more.

So there you go Sherry, three alternatives for you to investigate.

I wish you success whatever you do and have a great day.
      Warmest Regards.
      Robert Allan

  9. Excellent tips for the beginning marketer! It’s definitely a good idea to check out the affiliate programs available for your niche and promote the products and services that you personally believe in. It leads to better conversions if you can write about a product you’re excited about.

The only piece of advice I could add for beginners is to choose a niche and affiliates based off your passions, not monetization.  Don’t just choose products with high commissions that are iffy. High commissions don’t mean squat if you can’t convert visitors into customers! Wouldn’t you agree that it’s very obvious on page when a website is only about pushing sales.

I concur with your opinion on the free platform to learn all about affiliate marketing. It’s an excellent resource. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    1. Hi Jade

Glad you liked my article and hope you went away with a tip or two and you will follow my advice if you’re not already an affiliate.
Its always going to be better to have a Niche you have either experience of the products within that Niche or you at least have some previous experience of the products.
Perhaps you worked in a store that sold them or you could even own them or have owned them in the past and can write a review of them from that first hand experience and knowledge.
You also must remember that above all you are supply a product that fills a need, or if you want to think along a different line.
You are supplying a solution to a problem.
In actual fact you are selling a promise that the product will fulfil that need and solve their problem.

Yes the program I’m with has everything that someone who wants to be their own boss needs in the way of training and support.
It would be well worth your while to pass on the URL to this site to your friends or acquaintances.
It could solve their money problems as well.

Whatever you do Jade I wish you success.
have a great day wherever you are in the world.
      Sincere regards.
      Robert Allan

  10. Great article! I think this is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for beginners. It’s one thing to watch a few videos about building your own website, as that’s not very hard. The questions usually arise around whether or not a specific niche is worth building a site around and how to find affiliate programs for it that would make the effort worthwhile. Looks like you’ve covered it quite well. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hello Mark and thank you for dropping by and leaving a comment.
Choosing the right affiliate program can give people a headache simply because there are so many to choose from.
However if a person does have a Niche in mind because they have experience or knowledge about products within that Niche then its a simply matter to type in the Niche/affiliate program and they are sure to get quite a few results.
Once they have a list of programs they can narrow it down even further by typing in the products they would like to promote/affiliate program and see what ones match up to their first list.
They can then investigate each of those affiliate programs to find out what one will be the best fit for them.
This does take a bit of time but well worth the effort as then they will have a pretty good idea what program to sign up to and what product(s) to earn an income from.
Please do visit again and pick up more tips and advice.
      have a great day Mark.
      Best wishes for success.
      Robert Allan
